The responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician include, but are not limited to: 

Responsibilities:

  • Keeps the Director and pharmacists informed about the activities of the department.
  • Maintains good working relationships within Pharmacy Services and all other departments with the organization.
  • Responds readily to requests/recommendations from the facility staff and pharmacists.
  • Proactively identifies and seeks opportunities to expand pharmacy workflow to accurately and more effectively resolve medication related problems.
  • Complies with facility and Pharmacy Services policies and procedures, and state and federal regulations.
  • Maintains floor stock of prescription and non-prescription medication throughout the facility.
  • Ensures proper storing and adequate inventory of pharmacy items throughout the facility; rotates stock and checks expiration dates.
  • Processes returns for all expired and unused medication for the Pharmacy department.
  • Fills and delivers enteral and nutritional supplements.
  • Performs repackaging duties as required.
  • Maintains a safe and clean pharmacy by complying with policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Enters new medication orders into the computer system accurately.
  • Enters reasonable number of prescriptions.
  • Processes refill requests for medications.
  • Ensures all orders are adjudicated appropriately through the pharmacy software and takes appropriate action to resolve errors.
  • Initiates the prior authorization process.
  • Maintains pharmacy formulary and inventory in the pharmacy dispensing software.
  • Prepares and labels of all medications, including but not limited to prescription and non-prescription medication.
  • Restocks and maintains the automated medication dispense units.
  • Identifies and resolves potential problems to ensure patients/residents have accurate and timely resolution of any medication or insurance related problems.
  • Participates in the quality management programs and performance improvement initiatives of the Pharmacy department.
  • Complies with the facility’s Safety and Infection Control programs; attends required in-services.
  • Complies with facility’s and Pharmacy Services policies regarding inventory, purchasing, receiving and storing all pharmaceuticals.
  • Prepares reports for the Pharmacy department as requested.
  • Provides nursing staff pharmacy and medication related trainings, per pharmacy policies and procedures.
  • Ensures all recall medications are removed from stock and addressed per policies and procedures.
  • Maintains compliance with HIPAA regulations.

Education and Experience:

  • A valid Pharmacy Technician license.
  • A minimum of six months of experience in a pharmacy setting.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Appropriate certificates/licenses required for the position
  • Basic computer knowledge and typing skills.
  • Knowledge of IV Laminar Flow Hood, or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
